Why should you read this book?
The Incendiaries by R. O. Kwon, published a few days ago, was named a Most Anticipated Book of 2018 by The New York Times, Time, BookRiot, BBC, among others. And, I was also dying to read it! It was definitely one of my most anticipated releases, as well!!
This novel deals with violence, religion, faith, beliefs, love and pain. The Incendiaries tells the story of Will and Phoebe and how this young woman, who is enrolled at an elite American university, is drawn into acts of domestic terrorism by a cult tied to North Korea.
I really enjoyed this book (and I’m certainly blown away when I remember this is Kwon’s debut). The writing is raw and Kwon is very straight-forward. I got the feeling that this book was really matured and thought-through. The writer builds her characters with mastery, depicting flawed and scarred people in a very acute way. Besides, I am fascinated by cults and their universe and I think Kwon explored this issue very well, connecting the cult’s roots to a country we tend to know little of.
The author also brought up some paradoxes which ended up raising lots of religious and philosophical questions. After all, Will, who had lost his faith in God, sees himself dealing with a girlfriend that becomes obsessed with religion and is consequently dragged to a terrorist group.
I’d like to thank Riverhead Books for the free copy. You can buy the book here.
