Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez: a masterpiece

Why should you read this book?

Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez is the book I have been needing for a long time. I’ve wanted to find a voice like hers for a while now. Her female characters are unapologetic, fierce, mischievous and volatile. This short story collection is far from feeding female stereotypes. This short story collection is simply brilliant. Oh Argentina, what amazing female and young writers you have! Let’s not forget that I read Mouthful of Birds by Samanta Schweblin in January and loved it!

This book is a vibrant portrait of Argentina and its women. Enriquez resorts to the macabre to explore certain issues like homelessness, poverty, corruption, violence, inequality and the horror perpetrated by the political regime. One of my favorite tales was The Dirty Kid that narrates the violent death of a homeless child.

Read this book, please! Her prose is real, violent and even demoniac. There’s a little bit of everything in this book! I love how some characters are vengeful, I love how others are reborn from the ashes and others are just simply a bit twisted.

I’d like to thank Hogarth for the free copy. You can buy it on Wordery or AbeBooks.
