Book Review: An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

Why should you read this book?

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones was selected for the Oprah’s Book Club and it was longlisted for the 2018 National Book Award For Fiction. It definitely is a solid, thought-provoking and engrossing book.

Celestial and Roy just got married and they are the embodiment of the American Dream and the New South. He’s an executive and she is fighting to become an artist. But, suddenly, Roy is sentenced to twelve years for a crime he didn’t commit. As Roy’s time in prison passes, their relationship grows apart.

When I was reading the Goodreads reviews, I noticed that An American Marriage generated a very lukewarm response which was surprising because I really enjoyed this book. I think I won’t forget this novel anytime soon. An American Marriage essentially deals with black identity, race, the American justice system, love, pain and blame. I think Jones truly wrote a thought-provoking novel and that’s why I think these characters and ideas will remain with me for a long time.

There’s a point in this book where the characters are causing pain and suffering simultaneously but it really isn’t their fault. That really made me think about how this often happens in real life. Sometimes the circumstances are to blame.

I highly recommend this novel! It’s perfect if you’re looking for a well-written book that will be a super quick read. I listened to the audiobook and loved it!

I’d like to thank Algonquin for sending a review copy. You can buy the book here.

Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of the American Dream. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. Until one day they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit.
Devastated and unmoored, Celestial finds herself struggling to hold on to the love that has been her centre, taking comfort in Andre, their closest friend. When Roy’s conviction is suddenly overturned, he returns home ready to resume their life together. A masterpiece of storytelling, An American Marriage offers a profoundly insightful look into the hearts and minds of three unforgettable characters who are at once bound together and separated by forces beyond their control.
